Masaan is a 2015 Indian drama-thriller, based on a short story written by Harish Joshi. It was produced and directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.The film tells the story of four people from very different backgrounds – a fearless young woman who is new to the city of Benares, a local politician fighting against religious prejudice, an aspiring photographer from a conservative family and a young man looking for work – who find themselves inextricably connected to each other's lives as they traverse the city of Benares after dark. During Ganesh Visarjan, young women are lured into the city of Benares with the promise of work, only to be handed over to local men who promise they will be taken to another city by truck. They are then forced into prostitution. Four people drawn together by fate play two interconnected roles in "Masaan". The first is an aggrieved native girl trying to make sense of her life after leaving home; the second, a local politician rooted in politics; the third is Nisha (Anushka Sharma), a photographer on a mission; and the fourth is Rohan (Ranveer Singh), an aspiring photographer who lands in Benares by chance looking for work. The characters are all caught up in the turbulence of life.The coming-of-age drama of "Masaan" starts on a boat, where Pooja (Richa Chaddha), along with several other girls, is being taken to Benares. The girl who sits next to Pooja is particularly worried, because she knows the whole plan of her father and husband’s helpers would go wrong. She soon proves to be right when they are all left stranded at the boat station by their ‘employers’ and suddenly finds herself alone in a strange place without any money or mobile phone. On the other hand, Devi (Saiyami Kher), a local politician, walks away from a police station after assaulting a constable who was beating up a rickshaw driver for not paying him his bribe. She is followed by Rohan (Ranveer Singh), who wishes to become a photographer. He watches her while he takes pictures of Ganesh pandals and she goes to take her morning jog. As she jogs on the same path where Pooja has been left alone and afraid, Devi suddenly sees Pooja and offers her help.
